Introduction to theOrthodonticDepartment

1.General information

As one of the key clinical departments in Stomatological Hospital of Shandong University, theDepartment of Orthodontics integratesdiagnosis,prevention,treatment,teaching andscientificresearch, and is a standing member of Chinese Orthodontic Society, Chinese Medical Doctor Association sleep medicine Specialized Committee, and Society of Digital Dentistry of Chinese Stomatological Association.Themedical staffof the department consists of 35 people, including 23 doctors and 12 nurses. Among the 23 doctors,11areattending doctors, 1issleep monitor, 3areassistant director physicians and 8aredirector physicians. We have7 master supervisors, 5 doctoral supervisors and 48 graduate students and residents in training.

The department of Orthodontics is also the key clinical department of the affiliated dental hospital of Shandong University, which is one of the "211 Project and 985 Project” universities. As a provincial orthodontic treatment center in Shandong province, theDepartment of Orthodontics has advanced equipment and excellent technology, equippedwith 24 internationallyadvanced comprehensive dental chairs, digital analysis, diagnosis and evaluation system of X-ray projection. The department is among the first few departments that systematically carried out the straight wire arch technique, self-ligating slot technique, customized lingual appliances, Invisible bracketless technique and implant anchorage technique in China. Standardized clinical operation and systematic medical quality control system are the guarantee of safe and efficient orthodontic treatment for patients and the therapeutic effects have been recognized by the majority of patients.

As the academic center of orthodontics in Shandong province, the department and institute of orthodontics undertakes the professional theoretical, experimental and clinical teaching tasks for undergraduates, postgraduates, doctoral students and advanced students ofStomatological Hospital of Shandong University. In 2003, it was approved by the State Council as the training center for doctoral students in orthodontics. It has established cooperative and exchange relations with many universities and scientific research institutions at home and abroad, andhasregularly sent teachers and graduate students to visit and study at the university of California, Los Angeles,University of Southern California,StateUniversity of New York atBuffalo,University of Nebraska LincolnMedicalCenter andUniversity of Japan. On March 25, 2016, it signed the cooperation project of China-Dutch Oral Functional Reconstruction Centerwith Oral Medical Center of Free University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands.In April 2019, it completed the construction of “Platform Construction of Research of Oral Dysfunctions in Shandong University”, and formed a systematic diagnosis and treatment system based on the morphology and function of the orofacial system, so as to provide patients with safer, more accurate and integral oral care.

(1) Comprehensive Orthodontic Treatment

(2) Auxiliary Orthodontic Treatment

● Surgical Orthodontics

Severe bony deformities can affect facial, functional, social and other aspects. TheOrthodonticDepartment of ShandongUniversityHospital has a good cooperation with theDepartment ofOral andMaxillofacialSurgery, and can perform the preoperative and postoperative orthodontics on patients with high satisfaction.

● Orthodontic Treatment in Sequence Treatment of Cleft Lip and Palate

Orthodontic treatment plays an important role in the sequence treatment of Cleft Lip and Palate. It is critical for the patients with cleft lip and palate to achieve ideal maxillofacial morphology and good function of stomatognathic system. Department of Orthodontics, Shandong University School of Stomatology actively advocates sequence treatment of Cleft Lip and Palate. With a well-established interdisciplinary treatment team, a wide range of treatment approaches were addressed by the experts from Department of Orthodontics for patients with cleft lip and palate with promising treatment effects.

(3) Adjunctive Treatment for Adults

● Orthodontic treatment for patients with periodontal diseases

In recent years, adult orthodontic treatment has drawnincreasing attention. Patients with periodontal disease achieved favorable treatment outcome under indications for orthodontic treatment by in-depth collaboration between Department of Orthodontics and Department of Periodontics.

● Orthodontic treatmentofpatients with TMD

Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) is a common disease in oral medicine. Some kinds of malocclusion are related with TMD. TheOrthodonticDepartment has a good cooperation with theJointDepartment,which is of great benefit to patientstoobtain better treatment results.

(4) Invisible and Esthetics Orthodontics

● Lingual orthodontics

The biomechanics of lingual orthodontics are different from that of labial orthodontics. The orthodontists in theStomatologicalHospital ofShandongUniversity can master the biomechanics of lingual orthodontics and obtain better results.

● Invisible orthodontics

Invisible orthodontics is toapplythree-dimensional digital technology and 3D printing technology according to the target of teeth movement, to produce a series of aligners and gradually move teeth to the aimed position and then correct malocclusion.

(5) Orthodontic Treatment in Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome

Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS),whosepopularname is" snoring", is a disease with high incidence andispotentiallyafatal threat to human health. TheDepartment ofOrthodontics has established a respiratory and sleep monitoring center to provide more accurate detection for OSAS patients.
